Episode #93 - Stéphane Piette

"Whatever the outcome, you will have a great time": making offline dating fun again

This episode was recorded on 29.07.2026 in Berlin.

Name: Stéphane Piette, @kiezdate
Topics: dating, board games, Berlin
Landed in Berlin: 11.09.2012

Together with his girlfriend, Stéphane co-created Kiez Date, a Berlin dating night built entirely around board games. He believes meeting someone shouldn’t feel like a job interview.

Six people per table, twenty minutes per round, and a matchmaking system that spares everyone the awkward « can I get your number » moment.

A lovely, honest chat about offline dating, social courage, and why sometimes the best ideas start as a joke between two people in love. 🎲✨

Notes from episode #93

Stéphane Piette joins berlindetoi to talk about Game Night Dating, the events he created with his girlfriend and which he describes as currently the best place to meet someone in Berlin.

The concept: gather around 40 single people, split them into tables of six, and get them playing simple, easy-to-learn board games, rotating tables every 20 minutes. No small talk pressure, no forced pickup lines, just the natural social lubricant of having fun together. At the end of the night, a classic matchmaking system (circle the names you’d like to see again) removes the awkwardness of asking for numbers directly.

Stéphane shares how he met his own girlfriend at a similar offline dating night, why he thinks in-person events cut through the exhaustion of app-based dating, and how Kiezdate fits into Berlin’s surprisingly vibrant offline dating scene alongside events like Overdated and Sore ThumbsHe also opens up about spin-off formats already tested (pottery nights, craft nights) and hints at more to come.
